Synopsis
The book is a new interpretation of Bachelard’s reading of psychoanalysis, both in the context of his epistemology and the philosophy of poetic imagination. Drawing on source material as well as on classic and new commentaries, the author reconstructs the assumptions of Bachelard’s “non-psychoanalysis,” which is not so much a new reading of Freud’s or Jung’s theses as an original method in which psychoanalytic concepts are inscribed in broader philosophical assumptions. when asking the question: Was Bachelard a psychoanalyst at all? the author examines the adequacy of assumptions, key ideas, and concepts. A significant advantage of the book is that it places Bachelard’s non-psychoanalysis in the broader context of the early history of the French psychoanalytic movement.
