Synopsis

The volume is the first in a four-part series funded by the National Programme for the Development of the Humanities (module Foundations 11 of the competition entitled ‘Patriotism in personal testimonies—diaries, letters, photographs, albums, musical works, etc.’). The volume, preceded by an introduction, comprises over 70 accounts by participants in the events of 1919 in Upper Silesia. Through them, an attempt was made to obtain answers to the question: how did the insurgents present their past? And does the perspective of the First Silesian Uprising given in the memoir material reflect ‘memory of authority’ or ‘private memory’? The entire introduction and selected texts have been translated into English.
