Synopsis

Providing shelter to those fleeing war is one of those events for which it is impossible to prepare—and yet, at the same time, we prepare for it our entire lives. The instance of hospitality is never separate from the entirety of our lives—our values, recognized norms, and in this case, above all, our understanding of relationships with other people, those who are different from us and (until now) strangers to us. In the dramatic hour of need after February 24, 2022, many Polish families suspended their daily routines and rushed to help Ukrainians affected by the terror of war.

The main theme of the book is this experience of hospitality—its causes (motivations for taking refugees into their homes), procedures (establishing relationships, setting rules for functioning in a non-standard everyday life) and consequences. How do the hosts who took Ukrainian refugees under their roofs view this event in retrospect? How did it unfold? What remains of it? And if it has changed anything, how?
