Synopsis
In the biographical novel Felix and Felka, Hans Joachim Schädlich, a contemporary German writer, pays tribute to the artist couple Felix Nussbaum and Felka Płatek. Written in a straightforward, word-saving manner, the novel is a reconstruction of their last years of life during the reign of the Third Reich. Due to their Jewish origins, they were forced to wander through various European countries (Italy, France and Belgium), finally hiding out in a Brussels flat. The stages in the life of the painter and his wife are interwoven with the paintings created during their exile, which reflect a sense of existential emptiness and fears for survival. The novel ends with the deportation of the protagonists to Auschwitz in July 1944.
