Synopsis

The Knýtlinga Saga (Saga of the Descendants of Knut) is a royal saga written around the mid-13th century, detailing the history of the rulers of Denmark from the 10th to the 12th centuries. It is attributed to the Icelandic historian and poet Olaf Thordarson. In its composition, the work follows the style of other royal sagas. What sets it apart is that it contains approximately fifty skaldic stanzas not preserved elsewhere, and that it focuses on the rulers of Denmark and their struggles on the Saxon-Slavic frontier. The Knýtlinga Saga includes a unique collection of skaldic poetry and serves as an essential testimony to the development of Danish royal tradition.
