Synopsis

The book is devoted to the presence of animals in the texts of selected authors of Polish literature (from the 19th to the 21st century). The textual manifestation of animals has a various character, ranging from lexical traces, through allegorical and symbolic presence, to the description of relationships based on the ability to lean empathetically towards the other. The aim of the publication is to observe the various languages used to represent animals in literary texts, including those that are, from today's perspective, already merely historical. The book uses biographical contexts, documenting human-animal bonds and fascinations, customary contexts, showing the historical variability of approaches to the animal, but also the findings of zoologists, but always in relation to the interpretation of the text under study, its genre and stylistic conditions and its position in the overall work of the authors.
