Synopsis
Seneca the Younger is one of the few surviving ancient authors who attempted to critically examine the myth of Jupiter’s mighty son as the supposed saviour of mankind and the gods – a figure very popular in antiquity and in later ages, worshipped as a god for a long time, embodying the ideal of masculinity and of the conqueror to whom numerous political protagonists with imperial ambitions aspired. This monograph aims to familiarise readers with the means by which the author of Hercules exposes the darker aspects of the famous warrior and the realities of the world that elevates such a hero to a pedestal.
