Synopsis
The novel for which Reymont received the Nobel Prize consists of four volumes, corresponding to the seasons in order: autumn, winter, spring, summer. The author included all the seasons, although the action of the novel covers ten months instead of twelve. Initially serialized in „Tygodnik Ilustrowany”, it was later published as a complete book. It has been reissued multiple times. The setting of the novel is a fictional village called Lipce, created by the author. The novel emphasizes Reymont's fondness for rural community life and their submission to the forces of nature. The language of the work is often colloquial and rich in dialectal elements, with the author drawing inspiration from folk songs and chants. Reymont skillfully employs a subtle stylization of local dialects to avoid discouraging the reader. The first volume largely presents the relationship between two individuals and their journey towards marriage: Maciej Boryna and Jagna Dominikówna (Paczesiówna), who is much younger than him. „Chłopi” encompasses many themes related to rural customs and the lives of peasants. Themes relating to nature can still be interpreted in new ways and can inspire discussions about ecology and the changes that have occurred since the publication of the novel until contemporary times.
